Remember When

I could not have found a better dedication to all those who love than a video from the movie Up with a background score of Alan Jackson’s “Remember When”. I haven’t seen the movie but I have seen this clip several times. The clip is a fast forward narration of Carl’s and Ellie’s life, from their marriage to their growing old together. Unfortunately, Ellie passes away leaving Carl alone. She gives him her diary which she used to called “My Adventure Book”. Ellie had a dream of having her house on the cliffs overlooking the Paradise Falls. After Ellie passes away, Carl lives with a regret that he could not fulfill her wish.

The video ends with a scene where Carl is going through Ellie’s adventure book. He comes to a section which she called “Stuffs to do”. Carl doesn’t have the heart to go through it because he knows that he could not fulfill Ellie’s wish. He is about to close the book when the page turns over accidentally. He sees their wedding photo pasted on the page. He curiously flips through rest of the pages and is overwhelmed when he sees that all of them had their photos.  Finally, on one of the pages he reads the following lines (in French) –

Merci pour cette belle aventure–
Il est temps pour toi d’en vivre une nouvelle!

Je t’aime
Ellie

These lines translate into –

Thank you for this wonderful adventure –
It is time for you to live a new one!

I love you
Ellie

Beautiful and touching is all that I can say.

Alan Jackson’s “Remember When” is a mesmerishing song. It naturally takes you down the lanes which you have walked with your beloved. This song added to the video from Up is simply perfect! My heartiest thanks to the person who mixed them.

Taken in New Delhi in August 2009. I was traveling in New Delhi and it suddenly rained that evening. A lot of people were caught unaware and were rushing to take shelter under bridges or bus stops. I was luckily already in an autorickshaw. I happened to pass by this couple. The man was physically challenged and his three-wheeler bike seemed to have stopped. The woman was pushing it, undeterred by the rain and the strong winds. There were no shelter close by! Not a great picture technically, but a touching one.
